Growing in times of difficulties...
It is going to rain.
It might not be that often seeing as we live in Southern California
But as we saw over the past week.
It is going to rain eventually.
Living here I think it makes me appreciate the rain more
When I lived in Seattle and later on in Portland it was simply an annoyance!
There is a song called "It is Raining" that comes out of a community of women from Liberia
They were going through some very difficult times
Lack of resources and opportunities
In this sense, the rain that was falling was those difficult times
They saw it as a curse or a blessing, or maybe both.
The rain could bring destruction and death
But it also brought new life and growth
They said that often in the difficult times of our lives
Is when there is the most opportunity for growing as human beings
Hebrews chapter 6
7 Ground that drinks up the rain falling on it repeatedly, and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and on the verge of being cursed; its end is to be burned over.
In the same way,
this season of our lives has been quite difficult
I have certainly felt the weight of it pressing in,
And I am sure it is much more difficult for many.
It also helps to not look at the News all the time,
they are constantly talking about it!
It helps to maintain some basic practices
To maintain our health, exercise and eating healthy
Reading Scripture, praying regularly, etc.
If you have extra time
trying to do something productive with it
Projects that haven’t had the chance to be taken care of,
Self-evaluation and reflection that may be needed
READ BOOKS PEOPLE!!
Look for areas of growth that can be beneficial
Look proactively into the future
And, just soaking in the rain… feel that pain
Feel that suffering, the loss, the grief.
Now what are we going to do with it?
How is this going to change us for the better?
How is God at work in the midst of the chaos?
How are we then reaching out to others?
Sharing this perspective
Helping to bring this positivity to others
In a way that brings out the best in them,
And not how we think it should be best for them either.
Bring positivity so others can grow in their own unique way.
God gives us the rain, its up to us what we do with it.
Here are the lyrics to the song "It is Raining":
(I know we are not supposed to say Alleluia during Lent
but I'm breaking with tradition and saying we could use it a little Alleluia!)
It is raining, all around me.
I can feel it, it’s a lot of rain.
I ask Jesus, to send down more rain,
Until we are filled, until we are filled,
With a lot of rain.
Alleluia eh! Alleluia eh-eh-eh!
We praise to the Lord Allelu, Allelu,
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.
